Giovanni
Polara introduce la conferenza di
I frontespizi virgiliani
In this paper I look at the title pages of a series of editions of the Roman poet Virgil published in Europe between 1500 and 1800. I wish to show that these title pages are appropriate in their respective ways to the poetry they introduce. But they also reflect the values and aesthetic principles of the age in which they are produced, acting as a sort of hermeneutic trigger which opens up some interpretive options and closes off others. That is, the baroque Virgil is not quite the same as the neoclassical Virgil, which helps us understand the interplay between author and reader as we, too, approach antiquity with the values and aesthetic principles of our own age.
La conferenza sarà tenuta in
italiano e l'ingresso e' libero.
